PRESS RELEASE – FIRE UPDATE

Posted on September 27th, 2023

The EPA has finished cleaning a majority of the catch basins surrounding the severely damaged Tissue Plant warehouse.  With the completion of this task, the City has reopened Taylor Street to non-commercial traffic. This will allow residents and visitors another avenue to traverse the city and access businesses adjacent to the fire site.

The City wants to thank the Main Street/DDA for adding “Downtown is Open for Business – Parking Available on Main Street” signs throughout the community. In addition, the City encourages the community to visit our local businesses throughout this ordeal to show your support and to assist them by your patronage.

For more detailed information on the fire, please go to the City’s website and listen to Fire Chief Daily’s presentation and the question/answer session afterwards. To avoid listening to what is a long Council meeting, you can fast forward to 5.25 minutes into the recording.

Federal, State and Insurance Officials are working on-site to determine the location and the precise cause of the fire. Their efforts will continue to the later part of next week. The EPA is getting bids from demolition companies to remove the overhead conveyor system and the demolition and cleanup of the warehouse site. The EPA and EGLE are continuing to monitor the air quality to ensure there are no potential health hazards to the community. The City has been actively working with Federal and State agencies to complete the massive number of tasks needed to eliminate all issues associated with the fire. The City has stressed daily the need to re-open the roads surrounding the warehouse, especially Main Street. All parties involved in this disaster are doing everything possible to rectify this situation. Please continue to follow the detours and avoid the area if possible. Please continue to patronize our downtown businesses, they need your support!

Fall Clean Up

Posted on September 18th, 2023

Starting on October 23 and ending November 3, 2023, the City’s Street Department will provide free pick-up service for yard rakings, brush, and small tree limbs (hereafter debris). After November 3, 2023 no debris is permitted to be placed at the edge of the streets. Debris must not be placed out for pick up before October 21, 2023.

Debris must be at the edge of the street, not in ditches or on grassy areas. We ask your cooperation in separating your leaves into one pile and your brush & small tree limbs into another to facilitate pickup.  If the items are not separated, the City cannot guarantee their pick-up. The City cannot and will not accept garbage, household trash, appliances of any type, tin, metal or items too heavy for one man to lift.

GRASS OR LEAVES IN PLASTIC BAGS WILL NOT BE PICKED UP!

North End of Main St Open

Posted on September 18th, 2023

The north end of Main Street (including the intersection of Main Street and State Street) is now open to normal vehicle traffic. Larger vehicles, such as semis, tractor trailers and dump trucks, are still being asked to take the established detour to move through the area, as the portion of Main Street near Tissue Depot remains closed.
