Press Release

Posted on March 22nd, 2024

The City of Cheboygan continues to work with the EPA and various stakeholders, including Cheboygan County, on the cleanup of the Tissue Depot warehouse site.  Our next focus is on the poly material piles and removing debris off the sidewalks around the site.

As of March 19, 2024, the EPA has received approval to move forward with safely disposing of the poly materials in a local landfill.  The City is asking for your patience and to please avoid the restricted area as cleanup progresses.  Over the next 45 days, please expect heavy equipment and some minimal road closures in the area due to the site clean-up.

The site is still secure and there are no health-related exposure issues to the public.  The City and County will continue to monitor the site cleanup progress to ensure public safety and to protect the surrounding neighborhoods.

Court Street Project: Starting Up Again Beginning of April

Posted on March 14th, 2024

This memo serves as a notice to the public that the City of Cheboygan is continuing the work to improve the roadway and utility infrastructure on Court Street, Pine Hill Avenue, Loomis Street, Filmore Street, and North Street during the continuation of the Court Street Sanitary Sewer and Water Main Replacement Project. A significant portion of the Court Street Sanitary Sewer and Water Main Replacement Project is being funded by an SRF (State Revolving Fund) grant through the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) that has been awarded to the City of Cheboygan.

The Project includes roadway reconstruction, sanitary sewer replacement, water main replacement, and storm sewer work along Court Street from Watson Street to South Huron Street and along Pine Hill Avenue from Loomis Street to Court Street. The project will also include water main replacement, partial roadway reconstruction and an HMA Mill and Overlay of Loomis Street from Pine Hill Avenue to Court Street, along Filmore Street from Seymour Street to Court Street. The project will also include sanitary sewer replacement and roadway reconstruction along North Street from Palmyra Street to Court Street. The work being completed will provide residents with an improved sanitary and water system, as well as an improved roadway surface and drainage. J & N Construction is the prime contractor performing the work.

Please note that the Project Schedule is tentative and subject to change due to circumstances such as weather and construction progress.

J & N’s tentative construction schedule is to complete the work that began last year starting at the beginning of April and continuing through the remainder of the spring and potentially into early summer. This work will include the remaining underground work along Court Street west of Western Avenue, and all work along Loomis Street, Pine Hill Street, North Street, and Filmore Street. The detour will be utilizing State Street and Western Avenue to bypass the road closure within the project limits. During the closures, the Contractor will work with any residents and businesses within the closure to ensure that their driveway access is maintained.

Businesses west of the project area along Court Street can be accessed via W State Street to Levering Road to Court Street.

Hubbell, Roth & Clark, Inc. has been retained by the City to provide construction observation and administrative services. A representative from HRC may be in contact with you if you live within the project limits.

Thank you for your cooperation in improving the infrastructure of the City of Cheboygan.
